From whatever road one chooses to enter Uzès, its towers are visible from far away surrounded by an ocean of red roofs. Settled on a promontory overlooking the vineyard Valley of Uzès County, this duchy city offers a scintillating contradiction of austere architecture and picturesque countryside.
Once inside the city, visitors could imagine going back in time. Thanks to an ambitious project, Uzès kept its authentic downtown with its exceptional stone architecture. Nestled around its castle, the city kept its medieval paved alleys, its impressive mansions from the XVII and XVIII-century and its hidden courtyards, gardens, circled stairways, arches and little squares. …
LIn the past, Uzès’ towers witnessed battles of temporal and spiritual powers: the power of the Duchy with the symbolic Bermonde Tower, the highest tower of the city, the austere and rectangular Bishop Tower, with its bell-tower overlooking the King’s tower and its “machicoulis”. Let’s not forget the Fenestrelle Tower with its bell-tower reminiscent of the Tower of Pisa and its lace construction.
Uzès is not only a tourist place but also offers a great quality of life. It preserved its old traditions with its wide varieties of fairs where locals from Uzès and its surrounding villages come and enjoy the: Garlic fair in June, the Wine fair in August, and the Truffle market in January… Each Saturday morning, grocery shoppers and curious visitors come and do their shopping or talk (“tchatcher” as we say in the south of France) on the Herbs Square (Place aux Herbes) in the middle of the cacophony of a colourful market.
Uzès is also a place where thousands of artists come to celebrate festivals such as the Uzès-Dance in June, Musical Nights in July, World Music festival in August…
